Do what makes you happy.
Everyone always says this right?
But what does it actually mean?
For me the day I bit the bullet and signed up for a Habitats for Humanity build was a stepping stone in my life.
I’ve always wanted to volunteer but wasn’t sure when or where or even how. When I was younger I did the Lifeline volunteer thing for a couple of days but that was my extent of experience.
Then by chance I was watching tv one day and saw something about the Habitats for Humanity charity and it peaked my interest instantly.
Here I am, a woman who loves to build things and who loves to help people, seeing an opportunity to be able to do both! My day was made. My husband laughed at how quickly I chose which build I wanted to do and booked it in.
It fit me perfectly and the experience gave me so much to think about and made my heart happy. Meant to be I think some would say.
I decided then and there that I would set my goal to be able to do a build, or some type of volunteer work overseas once every year or two.
That was back in 2016.
So here we are now in 2018. Yep, you guessed it – I am off on another volunteering trip.
This time I am off to the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador. I know, Bucket list right?
When I found out Global Work and Travel had this opportunity I was unable to say no.
I get to work in the community as well as participating in conservation activities. It’s a win-win situation for someone who loves animals and wants to help people.
So I’ve dedicated myself to learning Spanish daily. I suck at pronouncing let’s be honest. But every day I at least get better at reading it, and I am even starting to hear some of the words when I listen to it being spoken as well. Baby steps is still steps isn’t it?
I will, of course be sharing my experience on here as well as my Instagram so I hope you will come along for the ride.
I don’t leave until the 27th June and I do have a fundraising page up for this trip so if you feel so inclined to help a woman out after reading my blogs then please click on this link.
I even have incentives that could perhaps get you seen more in the internet community. I’m no one special but I do have a heart who wants to help others, even if I do struggle to like some people. We can’t like everyone in life though so I guess that’s ok.
So to answer the question I asked at the start – doing what makes you happy will be individual to you. For me I love volunteering abroad, I get to help others and feed my soul and fill my cup at the same time. Keep trying things until you find what works.
If you have participated in any volunteer work please comment on this story. I love to hear about others experiences and maybe even find another company to choose for my next volunteering trip! Or maybe even a volunteer buddy for my next trip!
Until next time
